Pride 821 opens with performative shows and food and joins similar WERC club on Cherry Avenue NE

CANTON – Kim Jackson said Pride 821 is a club open to the gay community and those who enjoy drag shows.

But the owner said the club also offers harmony, dancing and food, including Sunday brunch, as well as "Fish Dinner Friday" and "Taco Tuesday."

And Pride 821 is open to all, she said.

"It's definitely a homosexual club, and I crave to have a place that is nice and clean and fun for the gay community," she said.

"I am who I am," Jackson said. But anyone "can come in here and wear whatever they want to wear and feel comfortable.

"... Be who you want to be. I really emphasize that – come as you are. It's OK; you don't have to hide in a closet."

Open since May at 401 Cherry Ave. NE in downtown Canton, Movement 821 is the second drag show club in that immediate area.

Nearby is WERC Dance & Bedtime Club at 304 Cherry Ave. NE.

'A place that's our bar.' LGBTQ+ club Darlin's CREW in downtown Canton has new owner

CANTON − Traffic was slow on a recent Friday night along Cherry Avenue NE in downtown Canton.

Sidewalks and surrounding streets also were calm. But behind the front door of Darlin's CREW, the LGBTQ+ bar and club was hopping.

Guests belted out karaoke versions of songs while a DJ played the tunes from a perch − "Pink Pony Club," "Rebel Yell," "Ring of Fire" and "Jessie's Girl" among them. Special effect lights projected down on those singing.

A bartender hustled from one end of the prevent to the other to pour drinks. Patrons smiled and chatted. Pool was played on a table in the corner.

That's exactly the upbeat and welcoming atmosphere that Dave Hite was hoping for when he purchased the longtime nightclub late last year from previous owner Stanley Senften. He renamed it from WERC to Darlin's CREW.

"I'm not going to get rich from it by any means," Hite said. "I just wish to make enough to keep going, and so people have a place to come to. It doesn't matter who you are − we contain straight people who arrive here, and friends and allies of the LGBT community.

"What fun is it whatever you're doin

The Sociologist Speaks

Gay bars and other forms of gender non-conforming nightlife are an vital part of many LGBTQIA+ people’s lives. Queer nightlife is often a origin of joy, pride, people, visibility, safety, care, and belonging.

But how do asexual people experience queer nightlife?

This is a question I examine in my latest publication in The Sociological Quarterly, which you can read here.

As I’ve argued before, asexuality is—or at least can be—queer. Yet, asexuality exists at the margins of not only the heteronormative world, but also the queer society. That marginality makes asexual perspectives especially valuable, but it also means that asexuality’s place in the broader queer community can feel shaky.

In other words, asexual people often exposure what I call uncertain queer belonging.

I drew on 23 interviews with asexual individuals to examine how asexuality’s tenuous place in the broader queer collective shapes asexual experiences of queer nightlife.

What I found is that uncertain queer belonging was core to understanding those experiences. I also found that some asexual avoid lgbtq+ nightlife altogether. Perhaps most compellingly, I also establish that some asexual r
