Iconic Midwest Gay Bar Closes Its Doors After 36 Years

The final hours of of a weekend-long garage sale brought a still end to an iconic institution within Quincy, Illinois’ LGBTQ community.

Irene’s Cabaret first opened its doors endorse in For the past 36 years, it has been a safe room for the LGBTQ people in a conservative, midwestern city of about 41, people located five hours southwest of Chicago.

Last month, the bar held a final night of dancing and entertainment before closing its doors one last time. Now, the process of cleaning out and selling pieces of the bar’s history brings support memories for those who have been involved with it all these years.

“So much has changed,” said owner and longtime manager Robert Clow. “You can be gay and proceed out to any lock in town now.”

It’s that sea change in attitudes and acceptance that makes Clow comfortable with his decision to shut down the bar. He looks forward to retirement.

    Compared to the previously released singles from LOWER, "SLOW Sway IN A GAY BAR" is the most straightforward of Benjamin Booker's recent singles. The song is a relatively straightforward plodding jam, drenched in the worlds of soul and R&B. There is just the slightest rock edge to remind you of Booker's earlier albums, and just enough of an experimental sound to fit in with the other songs we've heard off his upcoming album. Each single from LOWER has been completely unexpected, so what could surprise us more than a fairly traditional soul song, even if it's still a little experimental?
