Athens Gay Bars & Café

The rich LGBTQ+ history of Athens, GA
Over the years, Athens has become a radiant hub for the LGBTQ+ population and allies alike. From engaging “Queer Trivia” nights at Athentic Brewing Company to fantastic drag performances by the Athens Showgirl Cabaret, a sense of pride can always be seen coursing through the population.
This year, Athens Pride & Homosexual Collective will be hosting the city’s 12th annual PRIDE week and festival, but with a very exciting new edition. The organization will be throwing the first Athens Event Paradedowntown on June 12th beginning on Hancock Way and ending with a BBQ in Lay Park, where Athens Pride & Queer Collective got its start. With all these events buzzing about the city, Athenians are ecstatic to be a part of local LGBTQ+ history.

Once a month, Athens comes out.
Smokers lounge on the patio, hopping through conversations, while inside patrons at the bar watch a younger crowd dance to the sounds of Madonna, Lady Gaga and Dierks Bentley. Near midnight, moving from one end of the small venue to the other becomes impossible. In the space of a few hours, Georgia Exclude is transformed into GA(Y) Bar.

Within five minutes I’m talking to my youthful 21-year-old friends who are just coming out, and the next I’m talking to a middle-aged performative queen and another moment I’m talking to a 75-year-old person in the community.”
A few years before, this gathering would contain been improbable — going to a drag present or gay-friendly event meant waiting for an annual gathering, being in the right place. But now, finding community is a near-dai
