NORTH LAWNDALE — In 2007, when Jai Rodriguez walked into Jayuya Barbershop in Humboldt Park it was his first time getting a haircut he actually wanted. 

For years, Rodriguez kept his hair curly and long down his assist. The cut he had in mind was drastically shorter — so much so that the barber was nervous about cutting it and asked Rodriguez five times if he was sure, Rodriguez said.

“It took him a while, and I remember the whole barbershop stopped what they were doing to come see,” Rodriguez said. “It was just so affirming to walk out of there and own the haircut that I wanted.”

Now, Rodriguez, a 38-year-old Puerto Rican and transmaculine barber based in south suburban Homewood, wants gay people who sit in his barber chair to feel the same affirmations. Through education and mentorship within his community, Rodriguez is building a barbershop centered around Black, gender non-conforming, transgender people. 

“One of the things that we don’t get all the age is businesses or places that put Black gay trans folks to the front,” Rodriguez said. “I think that when we make a service that’s made for all of us — if you are servicing queer gender non-conforming Black folks — then everything else can

Before embarking on their cosmetology journey, Claudia studied game art and programming, showing a diverse expertise set and creative background. They then worked as a florist, where they further honed their skilled abilities, before transitioning into the world of beauty.

Claudia is passionate about their work with Hair Has No Gender, a not-for-profit, founded by Jamie DiGrazia. Ask them about it!

A firm believer in embracing new opportunities, Claudia is inspired by RuPaul’s words: “So many times people are afraid to launch something because of hesitate of failing. But it can be fabulous because it leads you to the next thing.”
