There Goes The Key West Gayborhood?

On February 5 the Equator Resort – the Male-Only – Clothing Optional hotel at 822 Fleming Street announced that after 27 years in business as the Equator, their last day of operation would be January 8, 2025, saying: “The organization has not sold, however there are new shareholders that have expanded their view of the corporations future plans.” The “expanded view” means the 34 room hotel with lovely grounds and two gorgeous pools will no longer be for gay men but rather be “welcome to all.” Insiders relate us the new mention will be “Bishop Key West” and will not be clothing optional. And just like that Key West has lost one of the few remaining “Gay” hotels.
Is our gayborhood disappearing? Is Key West becoming less gay? What does the loss of gay spaces mean for gay businesses and our island LGBTQ+ community? Our downtown business district and our Key West group in general? Do proprietors of gay establishments possess a responsibili

Key West is super gay!
The island's history as a gay destination dates back to the 1950s when well-known LGBTQ celebrities like Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Jerry Herman, Leonard Bernstein, and Elizabeth Bishop have since made it their home. Subsequently in 1983, Key West became the first place in the US to elect an openly gay mayor (Richard A. Heyman), then in 2000, the island's motto became: “One Human Family“.
Today, this remarkable small island in south Florida has grow an incredible gay mecca – one of the most famous, in proof, across the whole US!
We've visited Key West on several occasions and always had a blast, especially when hitting the gay bars of Duval Street. There are so many things to do for lgbtq+ travelers and with regards to the hotels, it was never a case of ‘Please can we have a double bed', but more – ‘Which of these many gay hotels should we stay at on this trip?'
There is an impressive number of different gay resorts in Key West to p
"Straight" B and B in Key West
The first year my husband and I travelled to Key West I looked at a long list of B&Bs/Guesthouses. I dealt mostly over the internet, sending emails to the ones I was interested in...well, I decided upon Eden House (a very nice, quaint place off the main drag, but about 5 blocks from Duval.) We loved it so much we hold returned every year since. (Fran, you could peer into them.

Anyway, the point here is this: there were two guesthouses whom I inquired with who were very bluff (and rude in my opinion) about how uncomfortable I would feel at their place with my husband since they catered to gay/lesbian couples. When I learned that all guesthouses are not for all people I changed the wording in my emails to include the question if a heterosexual couple would be welcome. (The reply for Eden was that ALL people are welcome...enough for me to like the place!)
So, lets just presume Fran does not long to end up at a place where she does not feel free to express her heterosexuality as equally as others may express their homosex
