Elton John comes out in the 1970s - what would be unlike today?

Did anybody really think Elton John was straight?
To add on that did women ever hold crushes on him and view him as a sex symbol in the 70’s? I’m sure some did but I’m talking about in general? Favor Elton John posters in teen magazines?
Or did people not view him in that way and just saw him as a talented, huge star?
Back to the gay question, I know Elton John was married to a gal from 1984-1988.

… wait, what? The VP’s public image was all about organism openly gay.
And at least two of the guys were straight.

Here’s an NME article from 1974 with Freddie Mercury going on record as stating he’s “gay as a daffodil,” but playing it coy when the reporter pursues that line of questioning further. Queen didn’t execute much press after the early years because they were slammed by the media so much and because Freddie was a shy and private person offstage - the not many interviews he did grant later on were not very revealing at all.

Elton John coming out earlier than he did wouldn’t have caused the issues su
40 Years Ago: Elton John Reveals Bisexuality
It’s difficult to remember a time when Elton John was in the closet. And yet, much of the earth was shocked when the flamboyant performer – who wore sparkly hot pants in concert and was followed to Manhattan lgbtq+ clubs – got candid about his personal being in the Oct. 7, 1976, issue of Rolling Stone magazine.
This wasn’t orchestrated as a publicity stunt, by the magazine or John. In fact, John had been avoiding the push during his run of shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden, which would be among his last before a planned hiatus. But writer Cliff Jahr and photographer Ron Pownall (the pair of freelancers that Rolling Stone had assigned to the piece) were persistent, and they finally got the call to meet with John on the last day of his tour. They would do the interview and shoot the photos in John’s suite at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel.
The magazine might not possess had an agenda (other than to feature one of the biggest stars in the world on the cover), but Jahr did. The writer was openly gay and had an inkling about the flamboyant rock star.

'Your Song' legend Sir Elton John has revealed the reason why he waited for so long to talk about his sexuality.
In a novel U.S. TV interview with 'Today' presenter Matt Lauer, he explained that despite coming out as bi in the Rolling Stone magazine back in 1976 he finally felt cozy with the 'gay' label in 1988 following his divorce from German lady Renate Blauel in '84:
"Nobody asked me. When (journalist) Cliff Jahr asked me in Rolling Stone, 'I'm gonna ask you a question, but if you don't want to acknowledge it, I'm gonna shift the tape recorder off.' And I said, 'You're gonna ask me if I'm gay or not.' And he said, 'How did you know that?'"
"I said, '"I've been waiting for people to demand me this. It's not exactly a secret. I live with my manager. I'm openly gay outside. I don't have a girlfriend. And nobody's ever actually out -- I just thought it was
Did people in 1974 equate "The Bitch is Back" = Elton John is gay?

I recall when the song came out, but was too young to have a concept of what entity gay was. Anyhoo, assuming I am not starting from a false premise, if, as I am told, Elton John’s gayness was not common facts in his 70’s heyday, what then did people make of a lyric where he is referring to himself as a “bitch”? Did that indication everyone in, and if not, why not? Did bitch have a unlike meaning back then?

Maybe I’m the only person who thought this, but when I was younger, I assumed he was singing about a gal, from her point of view. This belief was compounded in my leisurely maturing brain when I heard Elton perform a duet of this ballad with Tina Turner.

“Bitch” was not automatically associated with gayness in the preliminary '70s. I think xnylder’s interpretation was a lot more common.

I don’t recall anyone making the connection back then. As was typical, only a tiny portion of those who listend to top forty songs actually listened to the lyrics. My impact was that he was referring to a woman.
