That ’90s Show Gay Traits Ozzie Is Breaking Modern Ground For Sitcom Representation

The character brings a modern perspective to a franchise that didn’t exactly portray gay characters in a welcome light previously…

That ‘70s Show ran for eight seasons and made household names out of its young cast. Original creators Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner, and Identify Brazill generated lightning in a bottle when Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama became notable faces of the period teen sitcom. The present depicted the personal lives of a group of teenagers living in a fictional Wisconsin town in the 1970s, bolstered by its usage of nostalgia and comedic elements.

Since the series went off the air in 2006, fans of That ‘70s Show have been looking for other television shows to satisfy their comedy series needs. Now, Netflix is running with the trend of rebooting classic television shows from the 1990s and 2000s, releasing the spin-off That ‘90s Show this week. However, one thing is entirely distinct from the show’s predecessor: gay representation is at the forefront.

A character named Ozzie appears as one of the main

Viewers are being welcomed support to Point Place, Wisconsin, in That '90s Illustrate, a reboot of the beloved Fox sitcom That '70s Show.

Netflix is behind the new comedy, and it follows Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna Pinciotti's (Laura Prepon) teen daughter Leia (Callie Haverda) as she visits her grandparents, Red and Kitty (Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp), for the summer.

Looking to reinvent herself, Leia starts to understand that through new friendships and adventures she may be able to complete just that in Signal Place, just like her parents did all those years before her.

But viewers appeared divided by LGBTQ representation in the entertainment, including character Ozzie (Reyn Doi) who comes out as gay during the first season.

In That '90s Show, Ozzie is out and arrogant with his closest friends, namely Leia, her neighbor Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Gwen's brother Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), and his girlfriend Nikki (Sam Morelos).

There is also another sweet moment in the first season, where Ozzie tells Kitty about his sexuality and asks her if she was "okay" with the fact that he is gay, to which she responds

Reyn Doi wasn't around during the 1990s, but the actor's doing his diligence on the Netflix series That '90s Show, the direct spinoff set two decades after the Fox series That '70s Show. Before joining the cast in 2023, Doi appeared in projects like Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024), Nickelodeon's Side Hustle, and Lionsgate's Barb and Star Move to Vista Del Mar (2021). While most of the cast has reprised their role to some capacity, part two, which premiered in June, focuses more on the younger cast with a slew of cameos.

The series stars Callie Haverda, who plays Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric Forman (Topher Grace) and Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon), who spends summers at her grandparents Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) and Red Forman's (Kurtwood Smith) at their dwelling in Point Place, Wisconsi

Firstly, I would like to say Happy New Year! As this year brings new TV shows and films, I’m looking forward to seeing you on my screen. I also want to add I am a fan of That '70s Show, I’ve seen the trailer for the new adaptation, That '90s Show multiple of times. It gives me so much excitement to see the new generation take over an astounding, funny, and heart-warming TV show.

Can you tell us more about the personality you play, Ozzie?

Ozzie is very honest, he’s very straightforward and he enjoys being in a team where they accept him. He can be judgmental at times, but also he has a kind side to him. He will reveal and declare his emotions sometimes to people he can have faith. He will become vulnerable and you’ll see glimpses of that in the show. I’m excited for the audience to encounter Ozzie.

What was the audition process like?

The producers wanted to see me for a callback after I had sent the audition in. When they wanted to meet, I was in Atlanta filming another Netflix movie called “The Outlaws”. We were staying in a hotel so I did the zoom-in on the bathroom and used an ice bucket to make sure the camera was in line with my face. It wasn’t the first room I w
