Margate celebrates Pride with march and drag party
BBC News, South East
Margate Pride celebrations have begun with a colourful celebration along the Kent town's seafront.
The annual event, which organisers said "seeks to advance equity and justice for LGBTQIA+ people", is in its ninth year.
The parade began at Walpole Bay Lawns at midday and moved along the seafront to Dreamland.
The theme park hosted DJs and speakers throughout Saturday afternoon, and is set to host a drag party on Saturday evening.
The event's line up includes DJ Jodie Harsh, former RuPaul's Drag Race UK contendant Bimini and DJ and performer Raven Mandella.
Margate Pride said: "Everyone is welcome at this lofty camp, sparkly celebration of pride together in Margate."
LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that stands for lesbian, lgbtq+, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual.

Queer sea shanties and Mx Margate
Pride in Margate begins at the glorious community owned Oval Bandstand in Cliftonville, the Margate neighbourhood up the hill from the main sands. It’s a family event (early in the day, at least) so if you have kids, they can join Story Time and boogie bounce off dance class, before Seaweed in the Fruit Locker take to the stage to perform sea shanties, and in a nod to the beauty pageants held here in less progressive decades, the alternative queer beauty pageant crowns the Mx Margate.
Rally together
There’s a serious show to Pride, too. Organisers say ”Margate Pride envisions a world where all LGBTQIA+ people live safely, joyfully and openly as our whole selves in the communities we dial home.” At the bandstand you will hear speakers who have gathered in activism, protest, celebration and advocacy.
